CEMC Cancels Annual Meeting

To safeguard against COVID-19 and the spread of the 2019 novel coronavirus, Cumberland Electric Membership Corporation has cancelled the 2020 annual members’ meeting that was scheduled for Saturday,Oct. 10, at Stewart County High School in Dover. In-person voting for director elections will be held at each CEMC office on Friday, Oct. 9, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Saturday, Oct. 10, from 8 to 11 a.m. Voting will be conducted outside each office via drive-thru, and safety precautions including physical distancing will be observed. Additional details regarding this year’s director elections will be available in October’s issue of The Tennessee Magazine, on our website and posted on social media in the coming weeks.

Two factors played into the decision to cancel annual meeting:

The safety and well-being of our consumer-members are our ultimate priorities. The state of Tennessee and the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention have cautioned against large in-person gatherings where it is difficult for individuals to remain spaced at least 6 feet apart. CEMC’s annual meeting typically draws a large crowd, and we are unable to provide social distancing for our members. We care about the communities we serve, and CEMC wants to do our part to keep our members safe and prevent the spread of the virus in our communities.

Electric co-op employees are stewards of critical infrastructure. Spread of the illness among co-op employees represents a real threat to the communities we serve. We have a heightened responsibility to protect the health and well-being of our workforce, and cancelling our annual meeting is a logical response.

Next year’s annual meeting will be held in the fall of 2021, with the date and location to be announced at a later date.

The health and safety of our employees and members is always our top priority and in an effort to carefully balance member service with the overall well-being of our communities, please be aware of the following:

• Drive-thru windows and our Call Center (800-987-2362) will remain open during regular business hours from 7:30a.m. - 4:30 p.m.
• 24-hour payment kiosks are available at all CEMC office locations

Our operations personnel will continue to do their important work to keep the power system operating reliably. CEMC will continue to respond to outages 24 hours a day. Please report outages via the SmartHub mobile app or by calling us at 800-987-2362.

It is unfortunate that some will use events like this to take advantage of others. CEMC reminds our members to be aware of scams targeting utility consumers. Your co-op will never:• Call to threaten disconnection

• Demand immediate payment with a prepaid card
• Show up to your home and request access indoors
• Ask for sensitive data like banking information via email or phone

This is a fluid situation, and we recognize that many businesses, individuals and families may be impacted by these unprecedented events. As this situation evolves, we are committed to being responsive to the needs of our members, employees and communities.  Thank you for your support as we work to keep our communities safe.
